List of Accused Priests in Minnesota

The Catholic Church is a large community where many people feel safe, but it has a troubling history with clergy abuse in Minnesota and other dioceses throughout the country. Abuse within the Roman Catholic Diocese often goes unreported due to people being fearful of the backlash or not knowing how to do it. The importance of reporting clergy abuse cannot be understated. Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers has dedicated themselves to fighting for survivors’ rights and helping them find a sense of closure, even if it’s years after the abuse occurred.

About Clergy Abuse

Clergy abuse is sexual abuse by clergy members within the Catholic Church. It’s an inappropriate and illegal sexual conduct by religious leaders toward their congregation. Church officials have been known to abuse adults within the church, but the majority of clergy abuse is child sexual abuse. The impact of sexual abuse on the survivors is serious. It can cause emotional and psychological trauma that they’ll deal with for the rest of their lives.

That’s why reporting any criminal sexual conduct to the police and then filing a lawsuit is so important. It can’t erase what was done, but it can be a step on the path to closure and healing because they’ll be held accountable, and it can stop the cycle of abuse. Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers is prepared to guide you along the way. We’ll help you through filing the lawsuit, gathering evidence, and then fighting for the settlement you deserve in negotiations or at trial.

Laws and Regulations in Minnesota

In Minnesota, the laws and regulations are in place to help survivors seek justice for those who sexually abused them. Those abused by clergy members have to consider the statute of limitations in Minnesota when they’re ready to come forward. The statute of limitations for survivors to file civil lawsuits varies. For those 18 and older, the suit must be filed within six years. For those abused under 18 years old, there isn’t a statute of limitations, and for those under 14, it needs to be filed before they turn 24.

Now, if the survivor wants to go with criminal charges, Minnesota has no statute of limitations. For the lawsuit to fall under this regulation, it needs to be considered criminal sexual conduct, 1st through 4th degree. In addition to the statute of limitations, Minnesota has mandatory reporting laws. This requires those within healthcare, law enforcement, human services, religious sectors, and other similar fields to report known or suspected child sexual abuse.

Filing a Clergy Sexual Abuse Lawsuit in Minnesota

Reporting sexual assault by clergy members isn’t easy to do. Reporting the abuse to the police is only part of the process. When you want to file civil or criminal charges against the church member who abused you, it’s best to know what the legal process will look like:

  • Initial Attorney Consultation: Meet with an attorney who has a proven track record with clergy abuse cases. They’ll hear your case and determine how to proceed with filing an official complaint.
  • Evidence Gathering: Collect as much evidence as possible that can strengthen your case. This includes testimonies, witness statements, and any documentation of the abuse if applicable.
  • Filing the Complaint: Officially file a complaint against the involved party or parties.
  • Discovery Process: Both sides of the lawsuit will have the opportunity to exchange information and review any new evidence before negotiations begin.
  • Settlement Negotiations or Trial: Settlement negotiations will start. In an ideal world, a settlement can be reached without going to trial. If it can’t, then the case will go before a judge.

Notable Cases and Outcomes in Minnesota

Over the years, there have been several substantiated claims of clergy abuse within Minnesota Dioceses. Here’s a look at some of the most notable cases and their outcomes:

  • Holy Innocents Catholic School: The Sis holy family is accused of abusing a former student. In 2018, this student came forth to speak about the consistent abuse by the Sis family, who lived on the school’s property in the 1970s and 1980s. She is Jane Doe 596 of those who were abused at the school. A judge dismissed four of the six claims, and the case is set to go to a jury trial.
  • St. Paul Minneapolis Archdiocese: Reverand Richard Thurner is a credibly accused clergy member whose abuse occurred while working at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Paul. Defendant Jane Doe sued the St. Paul Minneapolis Archdiocese for not keeping her and others safe from abuse even though they knew the priest admitted to inappropriately touching teenage boys in the 1960s and 1970s. Her case was settled for an undisclosed amount.
  • St. John’s Abbey: St. John Abbey is one of the largest benedictine monasteries in the country, and more than 15,000 pages of information about 18 Priests accused of sexual abuse. The documents state that these 18 are “likely offenders” with abuse histories dating back to the 1960s. All 18 were permanently removed from ministry, and eight of the 18 are deceased.
